Kosei Komatsu

ART Japan 2024-05-15

What I seek in my work is a sense of surprise and discovery that comes from the phenomena produced by materials that are everywhere, such as light, water, cloth and marble.

Kosei Komatsu is a Japanese artist who is known for his contemporary installations that take different shapes according to the surrounding environment. Kosei Komatsu was born in 1981. After completing graduate school at the Tokyo University of Arts in 2006, he became a member of Atelier OMOYA, an artists’group. His current work encompasses a broad range of artistic endeavors in Japan and abroad in various genres. In his group works, Komatsu pursues the sense of surprise and discoveries originating from phenomena caused by materials that exist anywhere, such as light, water, cloth and marbles.

Kosei Komatsu's work gets inspired by beauty in nature, especially one the bird has; how do they fly? Why the mechanism and dynamics, for example, the shape of feather or the movement of their flight, looks so beautiful and attractive inevitably? Starting from those questions, Komatsu has applied all those natural features of them into his art projects. In his private works, he creates numerous pieces under the theme of the evolution of birds and their beauty.

Since 2014, he became independent and established Kosei Komatsu Studio. His interest in "levitation" has led him to create works based on the themes of "birds" and "feathers". With the keywords of "lightness", "movement", and "light", he pursues an expression in which the technology of nature and the technology created by human beings intersect. His works are art-oriented and are highly regarded both domestically and internationally in the fields of design and display. Currently, he exhibits his works at art museums and also creates intallations for commercial facilities.
