Cabanas no Rio is 1 hour south from Lisbon, in the village of Comporta - Portugal - a cherished region in the Sado Natural Reserve. With beautiful white sandy beaches, the green immensity of rice fields, typical fishermen's houses, unique regional food and wine, and the diversity of animals who have chosen to live here, the location offers guests a vivid yet serene holiday experience.

Cabanas no Rio was designed by Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus. Based on the principles of repurposing existing architectural narratives and reclaiming the rich history of the land, the home is a romantic refuge and a place to reconnect with the landscape and the beauty of Comporta.

The 2 pitched roofed cabins stand on the banks of the Sado river, an intimate tableau in a truly fertile paradise. From the cabins, a small jetty extends on stilts, which serves as an outdoor living space and leads you to the water's edge. From here, you can see the Palafitte harbour of Carrasqueira, a masterpiece of folk architecture. This seemingly fragile structure, unique in Europe, was an ingenious solution that the local fishing community built to access their boats during low tide, as the banks of the river get very muddy.

p>Once, two old huts used by local fishermen, became a family retreat. Though small, 14 square meters each, they were built off-site and transported to Comporta, where they now blend seamlessly into a landscape of rivers, tides, and sunbaked wood.

Using local "costaneiros" timber and having exposed it to the local climate, gives the structure a unique personality "The wharf is medieval and assembled entirely of wood," said the architects, explaining their choice of material. "We wanted to use the same materials for the construction, ensuring a shared identity in time, place, and value. The material inevitably would be vulnerable and naturally weather with the seasons."

Free from excess and superfluous objects, Cabanas no Rio feels as though you are a part of something larger. The challenges and stimulants of everyday life dissolve, as your rhythms become attuned to the river, the wind, the sun and stars. The walls appear to melt away, revealing expansive views.
