In this Master Class, Brahman Perera introduced the importance of color in interior design and shared his views on current industry trends. He began by discussing the connection between minimalism and eclecticism, believing that the two are intrinsically linked. However, he personally prefers eclecticism and enjoys embracing intricate decorations. In his view, atmosphere determines the character, emotion, and feel of a space, making it the key to a successful design. In addition to analyzing the role of color in projects, he also detailed the entire design process, from conceptualization to final execution.
Speaking about his background in fashion design, Brahman Perera believes it has deeply influenced his design philosophy and approach to color. Growing up in both Sri Lanka and Australia, he was immersed in vibrant color cultures. He sees little difference between fashion and interior design, as both serve as forms of self-expression. Just as clothing choices reflect an individual’s identity, interior design should convey a unique personal style. His experience at Fiona Lynch’s studio also played a significant role in shaping his design methods, helping him develop a clearer approach. Through collaboration, he learned valuable lessons about supporting local designers and artistic expression.
When it comes to finding inspiration, Brahman Perera prefers reading physical books rather than relying on digital content. He has collected numerous vintage books on photography, fashion, and architecture, believing that the ever-changing elements of nature and art provide the best color inspiration. He emphasizes that color combinations should go beyond conventional interior design influences, encouraging designers to draw from their surroundings and everyday life. Additionally, he shared some of his treasured vintage books, such as Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons, which he finds visually inspiring and a constant source of creative energy.
