The Nolinski Restaurant, a five-star hotel in Paris, was designed by British designer John Whelan. Featuring gold leaf "sunrise" and mirrored paneling, the art deco Paris restaurant turned the place upside down with 1970-style details.
The restaurant is located in the first district of Paris, a short walk from the Louvre museum and the tuileries. It previously featured a blue and gray surface, as well as a falling ceiling, leading to what John Whelan called an overall "cold" interior. To give the restaurant a warm feel, John Whelan decided to base his design on the art deco movement's rich palette of materials.
John Whelan says, "my main inspiration is the rigorous Parisian decorative arts of the 1930s -- think jean-michel Frank, Pierre Legrain or Sue et Mare. They tend to use the simplest palette, but emphasize their work with beautiful metal and wood."
