Designed to mimic the surrounding rock formations, Casa Katana's angular form resembles a "knife cut from a katana sword" - a Japanese sword for which the house is named. At the same time, its location below ground will help minimize its visual impact on the site and passively heat and cool its living spaces through thermal mass.
One of the main concerns of Konstantinos Stathopoulos, founder of KRAK Architects, was to allow the home to fully integrate into the landscape without compromising the beauty of the plot. The idea was inspired by the unique morphology of the plot and the particular characteristics of the site, rock formations, orientation and views.
Embedding a house into the ground to reduce its visual impact has become a popular architectural trend in recent years. Underground houses are popular because they provide people with an "escape from the urban landscape". Underground dwellings seem to meet the need to integrate with the natural environment in a better way.
