Studio Corkinho

Still Room

Studio Corkinho completed the Still Room in a 19th-century Antwerp building, a convent space where individuals can escape from quiet contemplation. The still-life room, a curvy combination of a bed and a writing desk, grew out of Studio Corkinho's obsession with silence and how it was used to give the building space a greater sense of meaning.

The room is located in the 11m-high Noorderpershuis Tower, which was once a power station near the port of Antwerp and was first built in 1878. As Noorderpershuis is protected, the studio had to create an ultra-quiet environment without making any major changes to the building's brick shell.

Etienne, an architect at Studio Corkinho, found himself recalling past trips to Japan, where he often went to Buddhist temples to practice meditation. During his travels, he visited traditional teahouses and hotels (also known as Ryokan) to "study the hollowness of traditional Japanese architecture." He also borrowed from the minimalist church designed by Dutch Benedictine monk and architect Dom Hans Van der Laan. "I wanted to understand the effect of natural light on the selected texture and see how light at different times and seasons interacts with the space," Etienne explained.
