Tomas Taveira

Amoreiras Towers

Born in 1938, Portuguese architect Tomás Taveira is a designer with many design publications to his credit. He holds a degree in architecture from the Technical University of Lisbon and a postgraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work is often used as a TV or film attraction.

Tomás Taveira's work is often known for its richness of colour, and his use of colour is so well developed that when people see colourful buildings in Portugal, they always associate the building with Tomás Taveira, and this has become a hallmark of his design.

For the Amoreiras Towers project, Tomás Taveira has appropriately reduced the use of colour, choosing warm tones as the dominant palette for the project. The use of adjacent colours provides a sense of comfort, while the brick red and lotus pink tones are more 'hot' in the sunlight and are intended to emphasise the 'warmth' of the building.

Occasionally there are areas where contrasting colours are used to soothe the 'heat' of the building and to enrich its colour. Some of the geometric forms are used as accents in the building, more as details that are embedded in the building to add layers.
