Located in Beitou, Taipei, the Hangtiangong Cultural Center is a recently completed project by YD Architects. The new cultural centre is hidden away from the entrance to the temple, nestled in a landscape of stacked slopes beside the mountain road. The first rays of sunlight at sunrise cast enchanting long shadows across the cascading landscape, softly echoing the long horizontal building forms and stone facades.
The central space of the building has an open courtyard with a circular roof, which connects the roof and basement, allowing natural light and ventilation to all floors, and creating interesting connections between the horizontal and vertical interior and exterior Spaces. This renovated cultural center carefully maintains a connection to the past, exposing the original columns to the interior, preserving the form of an open courtyard, and maintaining a relationship with the stone retaining walls.
