Nuwa Hotel

Nuwa, a small hotel north of Seoul, is a tiny one-room hotel measuring less than 30 square meters tucked away in a narrow alley in Seochon, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Seoul's Jongno-gu district. The project was designed by design studio Z Lab, who designed it with a huge porthole and sunken bathroom.

Nuwa is a traditional Korean house, also known as a hanok. Initially, it was poorly insulated and waterproof, meaning Z Lab had to completely dismantle the structure to make it big enough to accommodate Nuwa.

The interior is now finished in natural tones, opening up a peaceful living space. In the corner is a sleeping space with a mattress supported by a slightly higher base. A large porthole in the adjacent wall allows guests to view the small outdoor garden. The window is also used as a reference to wayu, a way to enjoy the spirit of entertainment and art, which means "rest and sightseeing" in Korean. This means, for example, reading paintings or books describing landscapes or historic places, or admiring a small garden at home when there is no time to be in nature.

A small space like Nuwa is not a complex large design, it is a strong first impression. Inside, a cream-colored cushion is placed on a wooden bench to form a comfortable reading area in the guest room. A long walnut table with a rough stone base on which one could sip tea. Next to a sunken water bath, guests can rest their feet inside. Additional washing facilities are hidden behind a door on the far side of the house. When night falls, woven curtains can be pulled back from the ceiling to hide the guests living inside from passers-by.
