Los Angeles–based architecture and design studio 22RE continues its ongoing collaboration with Malbon Golf with the debut of their new flagship store on Melrose Place. The 1,800-square-foot space reinterprets elements of Hollywood Regency and Art Deco through 22RE’s contemporary lens, drawing from Los Angeles golf heritage and the classic elegance of early LA interiors.
Designed to evoke a classic clubhouse, the store unfolds as a sequence of three distinct spatial zones, leaning into a domestic intimacy that reframes a traditionally commercial space. A patterned stone staircase leads into the foyer, where product is framed by cherry wood wall and ceiling panels. A gentle three-step rise and integrated ramp guides visitors into the central “living room” space – the heart of the store – which houses custom open shoe displays and bespoke metal clothing racks, with spiral detailing that nod to the motion of a golf ball in play.
The flow concludes in the back room, centered around a custom display case beneath a coved ceiling and flanked by two Japanese inspired, plant-filled atriums. Here, changing rooms are treated as extensions of the domestic architecture – high-gloss lacquer, European detailing, and layered lighting – ensuring the intimate atmosphere carries through even the most functional moments of the retail experience.
A series of details nod to LA’s Art Deco and mid-century lineage: patterned wood floors with stone inlays, intricate custom moldings, and cherry wood window screens introduce warmth, tactility, and depth to the store. The palette centers on Costa Esmeralda stone and rich cherry wood, balancing comfort with a quiet sense of glamour.
Lighting was approached with a residential sensibility, incorporating a blend of present and past modernist design, all while complementing the natural light filtered through the atrium screens. An assortment of vintage Bruno Munari, Vico Magistretti, Lisa Johansson Pape, and Paavo Tynell lighting was seamlessly paired with contemporary designs from Kelly Wearstler and HENRII. Taking cues from European Art Deco and early Frank Lloyd Wright, 22RE illuminates and aligns form, scale, and materiality with the architecture.
The result is a retail environment that feels rooted, local, and softly luxurious – honoring the heritage of Melrose Place and the history of golf in Los Angeles, while expressing Malbon’s contemporary identity.
