Corpus Studio

Zola Apartment

Interiors Houses Paris 2024-08-02

Located in a Haussmann building, just a stone’s throw from the Seine River and the Eiffel Tower, this apartment features abundant and desirable qualities, including two balconies, clear views out over the rooftops of Paris, and constant light throughout the day thanks to its southern aspect.

Although Corpus Studio was tempted to knock down the partition walls and create an open-plan layout, they ultimately opted for a classic division of space. They preferred to retain the well- proportioned layout and inherent distribution of the apartment to preserve its character, while adding touches of contemporaneity through architectural intervention at certain nodal points.

Sculptural geometric shapes such as a custom-made triangular washbasin, a theatrically oblique walled entrance, and a semi-circular nook featuring a built-in bench are the cornerstone elements introduced into the apartment to evoke a certain playfulness and striking aesthetic. Smoky tinted oak floorboards and pastel hued walls create warm and cosy atmosphere. Adding to the architectural dynamism, curtains and blinds have been installed to filter light with dramatic effect, creating an aura of serenity that deepens as the colours of the sunlight change throughout the day.

The furniture is eclectic, featuring a curvaceous contemporary black velvet sofa, a 1930s bronze lamp, a vibrant mint green Etorre Sottsass plywood chair, and hand-carved oak panels by artist Jean Touret. The juxtaposition of eras, materials, textures, and colours gives the project substance and an unexpected zest.
