Frank Lloyd Wright

1962 Marin County Civic Center

We know that good architecture does not harm the landscape, but makes it more beautiful than it was before it was built. You have one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen in Marin County, and I am proud to make the County's architecture a beautiful feature of the area.

Completed in 1962, it is one of the few state-funded buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Government buildings always seem to require your attention to their thrust into the sky. Wright's design here avoids the long, low horizontal curve that surrounds the ground and merges with the hills to the east. "We know that good architecture does not harm the landscape, but makes it more beautiful than it was before it was built. You have one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen in Marin County, and I am proud to make the County's architecture a beautiful feature of the area." - Frank Lloyd Wright

Geometry is produced by circles. The huge central arch on the highway gives way to two dwindling arches that extend back to form a blue roof that blends into the Californian sky; These three sets of arches seem to pay homage to three mountains in the distance. This is Wright's 770 and final commission. Unfortunately, he did not witness its completion and died in April 1959. From a 172-foot gold spire influenced by the East, to color schemes that mimic the surrounding landscape, to the open and flowing feel of the structure, the design is clearly in the classic Frank Lloyd Wright style.
