Helaine Blumenfeld

ART Sculpture USA 2024-08-30

My hope is that my work might inspire people to overcome apathy and restore empathy, to revive the belief that there is a spiritual value that soars above the material.

An American artist living between the United Kingdom and Italy, Helaine Blumenfeld was a professor of philosophy before she turned to sculpture as a way to express her dreams and emotions. Regarded as one of the most respected sculptresses of her generation, she has been hailed as the successor to Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Helaine Blumenfeld’s facility at positioning her sculpture in the magical zone between abstraction and figuration has been the key to her success. By not directly imitating the human figure, and instead instilling within her work something of nature’s immutable essence, her compositions speak directly and eloquently to our shared humanity.

Helaine Blumenfeld is an artist who is continually reinventing herself in the search for a vocabulary of form. Sculpture, for her, is never concerned simply with observation or narrative, but with experience, with a knowledge which is far from obvious but which advances us in our understanding of who we are and how we fit into the world around us. The work of Helaine Blumenfeld communicates on a number of levels, visual and imaginative, tactile and emotional. Stunningly beautiful, her sculptures capture and explore countless emotions of the human condition such as vulnerability, turbulence, fragility, dependency, strength, joy and beauty.

Helaine Blumenfeld’s voice has always come from within, with no allegiance to any particular style or movement. Her singular vision has brought us the‘Genre Blumenfeld’. She is widely recognised as one of the most significant sculptors of her generation. As an artist, Blumenfeld has sought to put into form the complexity, beauty, and mystery of the human spirit:“My hope is that my work might inspire people to overcome apathy and restore empathy, to revive the belief that there is a spiritual value that soars above the material.”

Best known for her monumental public commissions, Blumenfeld is passionate about bringing sculpture into the public domain, creating works that have become integral to the cultural landscape of the UK. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors and has served on its council and as its Vice-President. She was the first woman to win the International Sculpture prize Il Premio Pietrasanta e la Versilia nel Mondo. Blumenfeld was awarded an Honorary OBE for services to the arts. Three monographs have been written about her work.
