Austrian-born ceramic artist Katarina Well has been living and working in her studio in Clairville, Sydney, for more than 20 years. Katarina Well completed her ceramic making course at Brookvale TAFE in 2000, continues to produce amazing pieces and set up her own studio in 2007.
Katarina Well loves the endless beauty of nature, inspired by the colors and textures of rocks, wasp nests or shark eggs. Therefore, many of her works use original oxides and porcelain slurry to retain the original tactile feel of the sculpture. At the same time, she does not use too much glaze. She likes a range of metallic paints, such as rust, copper and bronze, with a rich palette of antiquity. These elements bring her work closer to nature.
Most of Katarina Well's work slowly "grows" over a week-long period. She describes the production process as a combination of "carpe diem" and "being in the moment," with each piece reminding her to focus on the present.
