Wall Sculptures
I want to emphasize the power of craftsmanship,And the slowness that follows.I want to push the boundaries of embroidery,Explore its painterly and spatial character.
Marijke De Cock lives and works in Antwerp, where she previously studied Fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. For many years, she has worked as a designer in the team at Dries Van Noten, focusing on unique accessories and jewelry for high fashion and often using embroidery techniques with a rich history.
An engagement that in a sense inspired her personal practice, by adopting an established craft that is usually related to the garment it is meant to serve, yet which she allows to function autonomously and in full.It all together manifests itself in distinctive series of abstracted, intuitive wall sculptures which, adorned with beads, above all celebrate the desire to create, using a material that goes back thousands of years, motivating us from childhood onwards to invent ornaments with it, to embellish a person or a place.
Marijke’s wall sculptures form a coherent body of works but can be divided into two separate series: Swirls and Compositions. The Swirls are directly related to the initial drawings and appear as monochrome volumes in either royal blue, black, gold, or iridescent oil black. They add a mesmerizing, voluminous shape to a room and introduce a vibrant interaction between the incoming light and the reflecting capacities of the innumerable glass beads.
