Ten years after the 2011 East Japan earthquake, Ishinomaki was launched as a public studio for citizens in June of the same year, continuing to make furniture for disaster recovery and reconstruction, as well as becoming a creative hub for the region.
After several moves, it now operates out of a renovated former seaweed processing plant in the city. Ten years on, Ishinomaki has taken various steps, including collaborating with designers in Japan and abroad.
The studio's "Local manufacturing projects" have now expanded to more than 10 locations around the world, including the United Kingdom, the Philippines, the United States and Germany, where Ishinomaki's products are produced. In Japan, a new brand "Ishinomaki Kobo by Karimoku" was launched in 2019 along with Karimoku Furniture.
Stylist Yumi Nakata attended the show at Calimocommons in Tokyo. Using furniture from the Ishinomaki Workshop and works from Keiji Ashizawa and Traf Design offices to express the living space, the Ishinomaki Laboratory is designed to show and allow visitors to experience the trajectory of the Ishinomaki workshop for 10 years, and at the same time, to experience the creative space of the Ishinomaki Workshop.
