Kelly Behun fuses modern art and design in this Manhattan apartment, a residence overlooking Central Park, which is a real work of art. Its signature buildings are the 1925 Steinway Hall, designed by Warren and Wetmore, and SHoP Architects' new tower. Kelly Behun has been bridging the worlds of art and architecture since she founded her studio in 2001.
Behun's 4,500-square-foot home spans the tower, has three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, and has perfect views of Central Park. What she liked about the apartment was that it felt as if it had been magically dropped into the geographic center of Manhattan, and the city seemed to unfold around you equally in all directions. Because Behun custom designed or curated every piece in the house, the building is more like a perfect combination of modern luxury and classical world details, as well as modern art and design.
At the entrance, with clear north-south views, the old Karabagh Runner sits on a white Macauba glass floor. An artsy painting hangs in the home office, and the furniture is hand-crafted king chairs lined with black oak and lacquered bookshelves. The master bedroom has a custom white oak bed trimmed in ivory velvet, and a pair of sculptural lamps stand on either side of the nightstand. In the guest bedroom, flaxen brass and ceramic lamps illuminate hand-painted wallpaper rinsed with ink on Japanese paper.
