Lover’s Walk

Interiors Houses Ireland 2022-02-09

Award-winning Design firm Kingston Lafferty Design has been tasked with renovating Lover's Walk, a detached 1970s family home perched on a hill overlooking Cork, Ireland. What started as a small scale of work quickly evolved into a comprehensive rethinking of each space and eventually into a more comprehensive project; This is conducive to putting forward avant-garde ideas and provides an opportunity for the owners to experiment with color. Kingston Lafferty Design didn't want the house to be just a painting, they felt it had to be nature-based, richer and deeper.

Like many buildings from the era, the building's central oak staircase appealed to the owners. The grid-like feel and framed views from all the surrounding rooms, such as century-old oak trees, ferns and mosses, give a sense of natural calm. It's a sense of permanence -- there's a sense of peace when you walk into the house.

Tangible and intangible elements are easily blended together in the building with layered depth, giving a backdrop to 70s structure, nostalgia, landscape and materials. Roisin believes that as a designer, the goal is to achieve balance and harmony. Polished concrete on the ground floor serves as an anchor for all other points, using marble, wood, ceramic and rich colours, the unique tones and textures of the marble chosen to reflect the landscape mimics the lush greenery of moss and trees.
