Linda Celestian

ART Sculpture USA 2024-03-19

Nature is alive and constantly in flux. I am fascinated by the energy, forms, and colors found in nature and everything they communicate.

Linda Celestian grew up in upstate New York. She attended Moore College of Art receiving an MFA in Fashion Design and completed a year of postgraduate study in Painting and Sculpture. After a few years as a designer in the Fashion industry she returned to fine art experimenting with new techniques and materials. She works with paint in its fluid form manipulating it to imitate natural occurrences. By combining large swaths of diaphanous silk and/or wool fabric and wire she creates floating sculptures that embody the piece’s title in an abstractive interpretation with the intent of bringing the power and beauty of nature inside.

The overarching theme throughout Linda Celestian work is the energy and life force she feel at the beach or on a hike through a forest. Nature is alive and in flux, ice melting, waves crashing, wood decaying and supporting new growth, flowers blooming, grass swaying in the breeze, and clouds floating across the sky. That is what inspires Linda Celestian to create, pulling from she memories and feelings about nature.

Linda Celestian enjoys exploring natural techniques to sculpt her fiber creations, including nuno felting, shibori dyeing, and rust dyeing. Silk has been her preferred material because of its diaphanous qualities. Inspired by nature, small sculptures are stitched to linen circles like specimens and can be installed as collections. Elegant wearables harken back to her fashion roots. Her work alludes to patterns that are found both in nature and the human body. She continually explores ways to use natural markings and natural occurrences such as rust and poured paint to express the undeniable connection between man and nature.
