‘Black is one of the most attitude color, he clearly expressed, I don't bother you, you don't bother me’ by Yohji Yamamoto

When architect and brand manager Carrie stood in front of the decrepit old single-family red-brick building, we firmly believed that this was the house we were looking for.

Field Spirit

Turyu island is located on the east side of Dongjiang Avenue and the west side of Houjie Waterway in Dongguan City, as an important physical evidence of Dongguan being pioneer of rural industrialization in China in the early stage of opening up. It is one of the most characteristic industrial sites in Dongguan. The Transformation and Revitalisation Project (below noted as ‘Project’) of Turyu Industrial Heritage is both the breakthrough point for the Three Rivers development, and also a demonstration project of Donguan threeyear’s Urban Quality Improvement Plan. Turyu Project has a total land area of 95234 square meters. The existing old buildings mainly consist of workshops, offices and dormitories, etc, of which 6 buildings have been included in the Historic Buildings List of Dongguan City and 33 buildings belong to Class I and II Conservation Buildings. Most of them have high revitalizing value. Kelly Moos Headquartershas a brand history of more than 10 years in the fashion field, and the brand will usher in a new journey here. In the early stage of the site selection process,

Combination of old and new

After the transformation, the first floor of the architecture is a collection store, exhibition space, outdoor courtyard and coffee bar. The second floor is the headquarters office. The inspiration comes from Yohji Yamamoto's concept of ‘anti-dressing’ in fashion. Therefore, we abandoned unnecessary decorations and kept the original concrete structure columns and the structure beams. The interior is divided into two areas by the difference between the height of the ground. The active area is defined as the ‘open living room’. The quiet area is defined as Spaces of ‘social encounters’.

The space materials are stainless steel, mirror, glass, cement, steel plate, old wood, etc. Materials and fabrics interact with each other, and the collision of materials allows us to feel the past, present and future in the space.

Fashion Pioneer

‘Clothing, in fact, will let us find ourselves’by Yohji Yamamoto

Just like people, cloth has life, growing and aging. When the fabric is left for a year or two, undergoing natural shrinkage, it reveals its natural charm. Each thread has its own life, maturing over the years. Through this process, the fabric can reveal the beauty it once hid. In the art museum, every piece of clothing is a character, and the space is like a big stage, making every piece of clothing blooming lively.

Yohji Yamamoto noted Perfection is ugly. He wanted to see Flaw, Failure, Mess, and Distortion in the mistakes of humans made. Perfection is the manifestation of order and harmony, the result of coercive force. Free people would not expect such a thing. Therefore, he believed that most women do not admire freedom, those who pursued symmetrical clothes. The broken pillars and the original strength of sand make fabric more soft and fragile. This strong contrast makes the space full of drama.

Multiple Contexts of Retail Space

The meaning of buying a commodity is far beyond material acquisition and possession. It also contains some spirituality, reflecting people's desire and yearning for a certain moment, a certain region, a certain way of life and so on. We hope that space is a pluralistic and open context, so that people can know more about the relationship between themselves and the outside world. It doesn't matter that users don't buy anything in an art museum, even though they just sit down, have a cup of coffee, chat with each other, or look at the collection of magazines and arts, etc. Only by ensuring this ‘openness’ of the space can there be room for the improvisational social interaction and other forms of curiosity.

In order to ensure that visitors have fresh and interests in their daily or weekly visits to the gallery, brand manager Kelly spent her days at the gallery exploring the aesthetics of life. Creativity encounters between people. Thus, in the integration of multiple contexts, new forms of cultural activities are constantly born here. Design and management are inseparable. Only after the delivery of design, the value of beauty does begin to play a real role. We hope that the design in the space is sustainable and created.
