Makiko Wakisaka

ART Sculpture Japan 2024-02-21

I try to express characteristics of each leaf having in my mind, how to utilize those leaves in my artwork.

Makiko Wakisaka is a Japanese textile artist. She creates works that appear fragile, but possess a strong energy similar to chrysalises, cocoons and seed grains. Makiko Wakisaka creates sculptures and installations from dried leaves by connecting them with hand and machine stitches.

Cette artiste japonaise utilise depuis 1994 des feuilles dont il ne reste que les veines. To keep her artwork fragile and soft, Makiko Wakisaka sew to connect leaf veins together with transparent nylon thread, not using glue or something to fix. The leaf is never identical and differ in shape, thickness, hardness, and warp condition. She try to express characteristics of each leaf having in my mind, how to utilize those leaves in oneself artwork.

Makiko Wakisaka use leaf veins for material. Its appearance is like lace and looks so fragile, but the line (vein) is the route to carry energy to be alive. Makiko Wakisaka cut the leaf vein and make contrast with line and lacy surface. This contrast makes beautiful shadow and silhouette. These are her theme of artwork. Soft sculptures, as she calls them, sometimes take the form of breathtaking monumental installations. One can't help but be moved by the poetry and fragility of her work.
