Maryam Riaz is a self-taught potter. Inspiration from nature and all its creatures, mountains and plants runs through her work. She spent much of her youth in the Iranian city of Shiraz, known for its poets, philosophers and the scent of orange blossoms, which interested her in writing.
She studied fashion design at The Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles before transferring and graduating from the School of Fashion Design and Marketing. Throughout her life, she has pursued other artistic interests in jewelry making, silverware making, casting and weaving, believing that art can not only give back to nature, but also express herself. Eventually making pottery became her primary form of expression.
There is no conflict in her work, and she is good at balancing colors, conveying pure harmony through her work's shape and color choices. There are earth colors such as OCra and brown. Shades of black, gray and white. Pastels and strong turquoise colours, despite being cool, give a warm atmosphere and a sense of comfort.
