Pieter Maes
We instinctively react to certain forms, materials and patterns because they are part of our history.
Paris-based designer, Pieter Maes was born in Antwerp and graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. His work includes furniture collections and limited editions for acclaimed brands and design galleries. Maes’s works are often marked by a sculptural nature and a tactile consistency. These qualities are rooted in the instinctive comprehension of ancient artefacts and timeless designs.
Pieter Maes pieces portray a contrasted appreciation for furniture that can either comply with traditional ideals or entirely rebel against them. This duality allows for the coexistence of diligence alongside the essence of reverie. He defined his approach to design as based primarily on three dimensions with less focus on drawing, so plaster was the ideal instinctive material for him to face his vision while transforming his form into a subtle materiality.
Pieter Maes echoes stone, bronze and solid wood with the development of human history and techniques for making objects from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. These materials are seen as a guarantee of aesthetic durability. Pieter, we instinctively respond to certain forms, materials and patterns because they are part of our history. So archetypes influence our subconscious.
