'WOOARA' is a fine dining Korean restaurant located in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, specializing in seafood and Korean beef. The name combines "Woo" (牛, the Chinese character for "cow") and "Ara" (a native Korean word for "sea"). Project Mark througu expressing a Korean sensibility and the undulations of the sea through modern and refined design, we aimed to embody a serene and restrained beauty that captures the profound depth of tradition.
Upon entering the space, visitors are greeted by a lobby that contrasts sharply with other areas, featuring a dark and heavy atmosphere designed to leave a calm yet sophisticated first impression. The walls are finished with rough materials reminiscent of natural stone, emphasizing the beauty of time’s passage and the essence of form. Soft indirect lighting adds a warm and gentle ambiance to the space, while the dark marble reception desk at the center of the lobby creates an understated sense of luxury.
The interplay of natural elements scattered throughout the space and the light from sculptural objects resembling ocean waves creates a warm and undulating ambiance. This combination provides a sense of calmness and richness, softly completing the Korean aesthetic infused into the space.
The corridor naturally incorporates refined Korean sensibilities. The ceiling features a modern reinterpretation of the rafters found in traditional hanok, capturing the essence of tradition in a serene and sophisticated manner.
The natural grain and polished forms of the wood add depth to the space, creating a simple yet stable and calming atmosphere. Soft lighting flows gently along the walls, evoking a sense of time’s passage with its smooth, rhythm. The doors of each room are designed with a modern interpretation of traditional Korean latticework, highlighting clean lines and textures with understated elegance.
'WOOARA' is a space where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony, achieved through understated yet refined design and meticulous attention to detail. Offering a serene atmosphere with profound resonance, it invites visitors to experience the essence of Korean cuisine and create truly memorable moments.
