Shiki Juraku is a house built in Kyoto's unique traditional architecture, a 100-year-old traditional machiya townhouse that has been transformed into a contemporary hotel.
Ju-no-raku means "ten pleasures", and this is a truly unique place that captures the traditions and magic of Kyoto. The space was originally renovated by Uoya Shigenori Architecture and transformed by 10 creatives from Shiki Juraku as a new approach to contemporary and conscious luxury.
Instead of repairing the damaged machiya surface, the studio reviewed its basic structure. This is a dark design project that adjusts the amount of light that passes through the shadows.
Although it faces a busy street, the space turns into quiet darkness as one moves deeper into the building. It provides guests with an opportunity to experience a traditional Kyoto lifestyle.
