Hip-hop has 50-year history since the 1970s, rising on the west coast of the United States. It experienced times from old school to new school. The city which hip-hop was born in and emanated from was L.A., California, on the west coast. 

Seeing from the development of hip-hop, L.A. is more like the label of old school. J.MARS is a platform where all dancers can exist and communicate. It means J.MARS doesn’t prefer only one style between old school and new school. And we believe balancing the west coast culture is in accord with the consumption habit of the young, which will bring more attraction to the brand.

What can stand for L.A.、west coast and old school? What can mostly attract young consumers now? Shine studio bases ideas on the brand mind of J.MARS,  and chooses elements of the palm tree and colors of sunset as the symbol of L.A., showing the not-very-pure brand style by the space with sense of technology、freedom and fashion.

The relationship between nothingness and essence showed by the overdoor not only impresses the pupils, but also arouses their curiosity and desire to explore. This project is in an office building, and this floor is mainly for working. The whole surrounding is about business style, so it is hard to associate hip-hop、freedom、rhythm、creativity. Therefore, the suspended light box and the luminous acrylic bench are aimed to change the guests’ feelings.

After a deep conversation with J.MARS, we both thought traditional reception was unnecessary. Shine studio used “street way” to solve “street problems”. We got inspired by the telegraph pole, using “telegraph pole” bar counter to satisfy the need to lean、operate laptop and mobile phone and so on. The palm tree sprayed with sliver metallic paint、the acrylic Ru-bik’s cube with yellow and purple gradient、the laser cloth with sense of technology、the crumpling cement wall…Shine studio uses a low-cost design to balance and integrate hip-hop culture and fashion taste.

The hollowed-out wall creates interest with the change of light and shadow, and gives dancers a proper distance and point of view to watch and communicate with each other. We prepare two different light control systems to satisfy two requests of teaching and video filming.
