10AM Penthouse

Interiors Houses Athens 2022-02-21

Original concrete walls serve as a backdrop for vintage furniture in this 1970s industrial building. The six-story warehouse, now named 10AM Lofts, features a multi-purpose event space in the basement and ground floor that can host a variety of exhibitions, dinners, and photography. The event Spaces are distributed on the ground floor and basement of the building.

The Penthouse apartment, located on two floors of the top floor, can be used as part of these events and can also be booked for private parties and long-term stays. Both Spaces were designed by Barcelona-based Andrew Trotter studio and local studios Gavalas Ioannidou Architecture and Eva Papadaki, while other designers also applied their personal touches to the four lofts, which are spread over the remaining two floors.

To make more room for the event space, the lowest two floors were stripped back to the original concrete shell. The studio wanted to lighten the load on the ground floor, so it inserted two new Windows, inlaid an entire wall with translucent glass tiles and painted the surface white. The railings, also painted in white, can be accessed by a set of spiral concrete steps.

Guests must descend a twisted weathering steel staircase to reach the basement, where the mood is decidedly more somber. Apart from a small amount of light provided by a chandelier, light only trickles into the space through a narrow opening left in the ceiling. Vintage furniture is sprinkled throughout to soften the space's harsh industrial feel. Heavy sand-colored linen curtains give a warm feeling to the natural light streaming through the Windows.

On the first floor of the Penthouse, there is also a study and a bathroom with a huge blocky bathtub. It sits next to wide sliding glass doors that offer views of the original Acropolis castle while bathing. Sweeping views of the city are also available from the sixth-floor master bedroom, which has glass walls at both ends. "It's a peaceful haven," explains studio Andrew Trotter. "In busy central Athens, the space is cool and calm."
