Standing 13.5 meters tall and weighing 1,500 tons, the Buddha is made of carefully selected solid stone. Mr. Ando's idea was to cover the Buddha's head with a pile of lavender, an idea he called "Head-facing Buddha." Embedded below the mountain is a 40-meter-long entrance tunnel and a rotunda that surrounds the statue.
The intention was to create a vivid sequence of Spaces, beginning with the long path through the tunnel, to raise the expectations of the statue. When arriving at the main hall, visitors look up at the Buddha, whose head is surrounded by a halo of the sky at the end of the tunnel.
