Design Interiors Shop Japan 2022-06-10

Toru Shimokawa designed a flagship store called ALSO Moonstar in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture. Architect Shimokawa's goal was to create a space where visitors could experience Moonstar's manufacturing philosophy. The shoe brand has been making shoes at its factory in Coolum since 1873.

Shimokawa didn't want it to be Japanese, he think space is the result of the basic methods of carpenters, plasterers, gardeners and other craftsmen, which are the basis of Japanese architecture. When he visited the Moonstar factory, Shimokawa  was impressed by their history and the hundreds of artisans who crafted the shoes.

The challenge during construction was that the interior work took six months to complete and was a continuous, labor-intensive process. A paving stone called Arare Koboshi was used on the floor of the renovated space, which is the highest level of gardener technique used in the famous Royal Villa of Katsura Rikyu. This method is a very time consuming technique, paving natural river stones without gaps, experienced craftsmen can only carry out 300 mm square in a day.

At the back of the store, Shimokawa designed a fitting space where customers can remove their shoes on a stone in front of the steps. The ceiling and walls of the renovated space are fitted with a seamless polished plaster finish. The eye-catching bright blue display stands are made of terrazzo.  Also, MoonStar is a company closely associated with school life, as it is known for its gym shoes. Against this backdrop, Shimokawa chose terrazzo and sago palms, which are commonly used in schools, for his shop. On the other hand, the ceiling and walls of the shop are made of red pine wood, which is usually used as the base floor. sneakers.
