McLean Quinlan is a family-run architecture studio creating distinct, beautifully crafted homes across the UK, Europe, and the US. With over 45 years of experience, the practice is internationally recognised for its sensitive and refined approach, where materiality, craft, and a deep sense of place come together.
Founded in 1982 by Fiona McLean, the practice is now run alongside her daughter Kate Quinlan and son-in-law Alastair Bowden. With studios in London and Winchester, McLean Quinlan designs both urban homes and countryside retreats, each one a tailored response to its setting and the lives of those who inhabit it. Natural materials and careful proportions are used to create homes that feel tactile, warm, and personal. The work delights in the sensory and the finely crafted, underpinned by rigour, detail, and a quiet luxury that is timeless rather than trend-led. McLean Quinlan is also known for designing beautifully integrated joinery and bespoke furniture pieces, adding cohesion, craftsmanship and individuality in each project.
The practice has long prioritised environmental impact and it’s committed to building as sustainably as possible. As early adopters of Passivhaus principles, they prioritise low-carbon materials, energy-efficient technologies, and site-responsive design. The surrounding landscape is considered from the earliest design stages to ensure each project is grounded in its setting. Drawing from local context and natural materials, their architectural response forms a quiet dialogue between building, earth, and place.
