CO-LAB is an architecture studio based in Tulum, Mexico, and Los Angeles, founded by Joshua Beck and Joana Gomes in 2010. They see design as an evolving process rather than the product of a “genius sketch,” with each project being a unique integration of client needs and site characteristics. The studio is dedicated to providing intelligent and well-crafted architectural solutions that enhance the relationship between people, nature, and the built environment.

In the Master Class, CO-LAB co-founder Joana shared their design approach, including material application, craftsmanship techniques, and the significance of handcrafting. Through an analysis of design drawings, she explained CO-LAB’s working principles and discussed construction challenges in Mexico’s hot and humid climate, such as the use of reinforced concrete arches, bamboo beams, and thatched roofs. These projects, deeply rooted in nature and traditional craftsmanship, reflect CO-LAB’s unique perspective on blending tradition with modern architecture.

During the discussion, CO-LAB shared insights on ventilation simulation, concrete material composition, lighting design, mosquito prevention measures, and the integration of air conditioning systems. For instance, they prefer to create a soft ambiance using ambient lighting and ground lights while concealing air conditioning units behind furniture or grilles. Additionally, in pool design, they focus on integrating architecture and structure seamlessly, optimizing equipment placement to achieve a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.
