The High Desert Retreat project was commissioned by a couple and designed by Aidlin Darling Design. This is a desert residence that strikes a balance between modernism and nature. Surrounding the site is a group of unique boulders. This wild environment provides a unique and natural landscape effect. Therefore, the designer completed the final design without removing any tree, creating a harmonious symbiosis with the environment , A residence away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Aidlin Darling design team took a proactive approach to develop their solutions. Camping on-site allows designers to better understand and make full use of the local climate, natural environment and landscape. This helps the architectural direction of the desert house. Through the architect's observation and understanding, the local conditions become clear to him. The geometric structure of the building is very quiet and clear, which is intentionally contrasted with the organic form of the desert. Since the ground is very low, its existence is minimized.

"A floating roof plan, a wooden volume and a collection of two concrete anchor walls" became the key to the design, as the final birth form of High Desert Retrea. The roof provides adequate shading and protection, so it is protected from the piercing sunlight from the inside to the outside. The concrete and the black wood siding made of specially treated pine are dark in color, creating a soft contrast with the tones of the desert. At the same time, the parallel concrete walls lead people's sight to the magnificent Coachella Valley landscape below.
