The "Garden of Peace" is a place of spiritual recollection, rest and preparation for the encounter with the "Obedentia et Pax" crypt and with the statue of St. John XXIII that welcomes pilgrims. It is a cloister, a place of silence characterized by the relationship with nature and with the open space delimited by a rhythmic sequence of high iron profiles. Three hundred and thirty iron stems embrace the space, control its size and mark the clear distinction between what is inside and the outside world.

A perimeter walkway leads up to the new entrance to the crypt. The floor of this walkway is made with a plurality of stones of various origins that represent the plurality of cultures and peoples, the main element of the ecumenical and intercultural dialogue widely sought by John XXIII during his life.

The entrance to the Crypt is a structure with a horizontal development that communicates discreetly with the architectural complex above. This structure "opens" the facade and the roof by folding the three surfaces that characterize it, inviting the pilgrims to enter. A negative bas-relief treatment recalls the richness of the pontiff's “decorations”, which are made with materials of popular everyday life to remember John XXIII's closeness to common life.
