Aaron Poritz is a Brooklyn-based ceramicist and furniture designer from Massachusetts.Growing up in his father’s woodshop and sculpture studio, he has always had a passion for understanding how objects and buildings are made.Poritz studied architecture at the California College of the Arts and graduated in 2008.He then moved to New York City to gain professional experience at a prestigious architecture firm.
In 2012, on a trip to Nicaragua, Poritz connected with a friend who was running a lumber export business focused on processing old growth trees that fell during Hurricane Felix in 2007.Poritz quickly saw an opportunity to design his first collection of furniture in wood. That collection was published in the New York Times in July of 2013, and his career grew organically from there.
In 2014, Poritz moved his studio to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with a focus on high-end residential, furniture and sculpture projects.Portiz’s studio is multidisciplinary, with both design and fabrication under one roof.Poritz’s designs focus on using exquisite materials paired with flawless fabrication. His work highlights the natural patterns and textures found in wood, stone and ceramics. While his furniture is highly detailed and timeless, his sculpture is playful and unexpected, inspired by ancient functional forms contrasted with wiled surface textures and colors.
