Asya Kozina
I love the feeling of creative liberty that a blank sheet of paper offers. It is a symbol of perfection and eternity.
Asya Kozina is a creative focused on exploring the possibilities of modern paper sculpture. Her interest as a professional artist lies in the field of cultural research, archiving and plastic expression of various historical, traditional and artistic representations. asya kozina designs intricate head ornaments with a puzzle of carefully cut paper shapes. Each piece is carefully crafted with an incredible attention to detail that highlights the delicate nature of paper as a medium. From elaborate curls to cascading waves and complex patterns, Asya’s creations demonstrate her mastery over the medium. asya’s designs borrow from the past, but also represent the present by integrating symbols of modern technology into one of the most lavish historical styles.
While studying decorative and applied art at Cherkasy National University in Ukraine, Asya tried her hand at different arts and crafts, from aquarelle painting and batik to woodcarving and marquetry, but it was paper which gave her the most fulfillment. Asya takes inspiration from the world of fashion, with Karl Lagerfeld and Jean-Paul Gaultier being particular idols. She is especially interested in ethnic clothing, including wedding dresses. Since 2012, Asya has worked with her husband Dmitry, a designer, who creates most of the sketches for future works. The detailed headdresses combine contemporary themes with historical elements, resembling the extravagant hair and head pieces of the Baroque period. Intricate lace, sophisticated baroque wigs topped with sailboats, octopuses and flowers, state-of-the-art animal sculptures–the range of Asya Kozina’s paper art is astounding, and it is hard to believe all her works are made of paper.
The plain white sheet works have become the artist’s signature mark. Asya believe that white paper allows for them to accent form and conceal secondary details. All of their pieces are crafted by hand, each unique in its own right, never to be replicated. This individuality forms an opposition to multiplying media images created with the help of digital tools, a representation of modern visual culture. At first glance, one may suspect some of Kozin’s works to be graphically designed through digital means. Happily enough, these projects have been left unaltered by present-day technology, a true representation of craftsmanship.
