Jane Yang D'Haene is a ceramic artist, born and raised in South Korea, now living in Brooklyn, New York. In her studio in Industry City, she experiments endlessly with details, textures and processes, blending traditional Korean pottery with contemporary design elements to produce ceramic art in porcelain and sculpture clay. D’Haene also designs functional ceramic objects under the name D-HAENE Studio.
Each of D’Haene’s pieces speaks to her heritage while tapping into the here and now, lending an energetic sense of place and power to their surroundings. D’Haene works in stoneware, hand building vessels that draw upon her Korean heritage, with shapes that descend from traditional ceramic forms such as the“dalhangari”or moon jar.
Instead of mirroring the smooth white exterior of the original vessels, D’Haene employs a variety of glazes and techniques to create texture, movement and tonal shifts. The resulting works take on a sculptural quality, mimicking the earth from which the clay itself is drawn. D’haene vessels are simultaneously terrestrial and other-worldly, abstracted and functional.
