Charles Trevelyan
Form and function are the essence of design, and I don't think an object can be classified as' design 'without at least some attention to these two aspects.
Charles Trevelyan is an Australian designer/artist based in London. By revealing and obscuring structure through various mediums, Trevelyan explores the limits of. Having studied material engineering and three-dimensional design, Charles Trevelyan makes organic creations that are innovative in both material and design. As a result, each object has its own unique outer texture, forming both a functional piece and an artistic engagement.
Trevelyan is the furniture and product designer behind Studio Trevelyan, the production house behind his namesake lines of tables, lighting, and design objects. His work fuses fine art and sculpture with furniture making, creating beautiful yet practical designs.“Form and function are the essence of design, and I don’t think an object can be classed as‘design’without at least some attention to both,”he says.“Design bridges these two extremes, and therefore must address both considerations to some degree.”
The designer’s work might best be described as bridging the fields of sculpture and industrial design. With a background in engineering, Trevelyan brings a structural expertise to his pieces. His childhood spent in the Australian outback, however, has not been lost. Although he now is based in London, arguably the industrial design capital of the world, the organicism in his work reflects values of handicraft, which Trevelyan says are culled from Perth’s appreciation of these same qualities. The organic form and concept are carried out by an underlying structural system. This relationship, between engineering, materials, and sculpture, is what defines Trevelyan’s work.
