Clare Cousins designed Aesop's flagship store in Dubai Mall, with three intersecting domes forming an engulfing ceiling. Geometry is reminiscent of the bizarre and multiple iterations of ancient Arab tomb structures (Qubba), which were originally tents made of animal skins.
In the Middle Ages, the Qubba took on a more formal architectural expression on a highly decorated dome structure. Here, the smooth curvature is juxtaposed with the linear form, and the positive and negative space above the head creates a sense of passage with shade and moments of sunlight. The ceiling is low and painted with rough ochre plaster, giving people a cordial feeling.
Visitors can explore and choose a complete range of skin, hair and body care products, featuring the highest quality plants and laboratory-produced ingredients. Aesop was established in Melbourne in 1987 and now offers its most advanced formulas in flagship stores around the world. As the company grows, well-considered design is still vital to the creation of each space.
