David Chipperfield has completed the Harlan Holden Store, a clothing retailer based in Seoul, South Korea. Founded in 2015, Harlan Holden Store has 20 stores in South Korea, Indonesia and the Philippines. The company rejects fast fashion, focusing instead on works of comfort and permanence. The new store is located in The Songpa Rakuten World Shopping Mall in Seoul, South Korea, and aims to serve and represent the brand's philosophy in both spatial and physical form.
The curved storefront is completely covered in grooved terrace-clay panels with a natural color and finish that gives it a strong physical presence in the mall. Openings in the facade create an entrance and display window that visually connects to the interior. The interior consists of three interconnected rooms, each of which has its own size and scale. Within each space, the niches house shelves, mannequins and lighting fixtures for display, freeing up the remaining space for recycling. The ceilings and walls are finished in white textured plaster, creating a calm atmosphere conducive to admiring the clothes.
