Melbourne-based Fiona Lynch Design studio has completed Balwyn House, a new residential project by architects Damian & Sonia Baldi and their daughter. Fiona Lynch's team was commissioned to design the interior. Stunning gemstone tones to highly edited material tones are layered to make everything in this home exude elegance and art.

The house is designed with large concrete panels, framed and cast on site. These panels are polished to create texture on the concrete surface. The cabinetry is designed so that it complements, rather than antagonizes, the solid concrete finish. Aged brass and oak joinery painted on grey surfaces, Elba Stone from Arte Domus is the only material used in the project.

Kitchen joinery is designed as loose components in the space rather than fixed joinery. There are plenty of concrete walls, which Fiona Lynch wanted to breathe through to make the kitchen cabinets feel more like furniture elements rather than simple cabinets. All the cabinets in the house use this method.

Rich velvets, floor-to-ceiling window upholstery and carpets in overdyed emerald, navy and ruby tones create a luxurious ambience that is enhanced by hard materials, clear white paint, silver fixtures and mirrored furniture in cool hues. Fiona Lynch added warm elements to balance the cool feeling, evident in the oak wood fittings and original brown leather furniture used. Custom designed joinery in the living space features perfectly proportioned grooves for the TV, fireplace, storage and display of items. The ceiling design does not have fixed surface mounted lights, but rather recessed balls to accommodate lighting tracks. Throughout the house, floor-to-ceiling passages act as doorways, giving an overall sense of grandeur to this calm and solid space.
