Born from a place of curiosity and discovery, Lee Mathews is an exploration in making. Drawing from the skill of local artists and craftspeople, visitors are taken on an intimate journey. Referencing organic geometric shapes, together with a curation of hard and roughened edge elements, the idea of contrast – between the makers, the process and the finished product – become the inspiration. Through soft and textural floor coverings and a layered approach to weaving in texture and form, the retail space is designed as a refreshing, questioning and inquisitive experience. As an extension of the brand, the sense of play combined with innovation and a carving of a uniqueness create the approach as a proposition of sorts.
Balancing these more concept-driven elements is the introduction of a more refined and tailored approach to custom joinery, furniture and key touch points throughout. As a nod to minimalist thinker and creator Donald Judd, architectural forms and monolithic masses emerge from various planes within the store. The counter-play between the polished, the raw, the sewn and the disheveled all express the inherent beauty and personality of each. The integration of custom joinery and suspended sculptural display elements create an anchoring base for the painterly approach to the Artist collaboration with Michael Gittings Studio. The piece appears as a floating and illuminated sculpture, inviting its audience, open for interpretation.
