A vibrant eclectic home in Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, has been designed by local interior design Studio Flack Studio. Fitzroy Residence draws inspiration from the cultural vibrancy surrounding its area, both as an immersive expression of its environment and a restorative complement to the community. Flack Studio has re-established a vision of openness and connection through a new approach that infuses character and infuses character to create a home with character.

The Fitzroy house sits behind its double facades and restores its original Victorian details through a deliberate and measured modern perspective. As a home for two, the revitalisation was inspired by reconnecting and integrating the living experience within the family and creating a meaningful connection to its north-facing garden space. The original sense of form was restored by leveling off the previous layering and stepped floors, resulting in an extended and connected home.

Flack Studio created opportunities for expression through colour, texture and contrast and proposed a home that echoes the vibrant and eclectic character of the area and the personality of the owner. Intended as an ideal retirement place, Fitzroy House reduces a previously limited four-bedroom gathering space to a well-designed two-bedroom home with a large and connected living, dining and kitchen space.

The original exterior walls and vestibule were restored to their former glory, and the design studio created an inspiring transition space between the interior and exterior. Deep red ochre paint creates a recognisable face on the front facade of the house. A solid combination of materials was used to outline the basic elements of the house, and to add depth, textured components were layered into each space, giving each space its own uniqueness and personality.
