This public restroom of the “marunouchi HOUSE” restaurant floor of the Shin-Marunouchi Building proposes an innovative use of color to blur the boundaries between gender. Yellow and green, two central and adjacent colors of the rainbow, a symbol of gender diversity, soften the gender divide long associated with conventional codes of red and blue.
Inside, colored light permeates the spaces, allowing visitors to experience the hues with their entire bodies. White tiling throughout — across floors, walls and ceilings — emphasizes cleanliness, its uneven textured surfaces creating subtle shadows as they catch the light. The strong presence of long, custom-made silver washbasins presents a new kind of restroom ritual, their curved and rounded structures embracing visitors' hands as they wash. The sensation of being saturated by the color of light transforms all elements of the restroom experience into something extraordinary, leaving a powerful lasting impression on the visitor.
