Wineworks, directly operated by Hyundai department store, opened its first store announcing the beginning of wine trends, second store creating a new crossroad with wine and culture, and the third store providing beyond wine but an elegant life as a brand. Labotory think that the brand has established an incredible baseline.
Therefore, for the fourth store, which will be created next in Mokdong, we have analyzed the characteristics of Mokdong and its encompassing of the diverse generations which were distinctive to Mokdong and most importantly in developing a worldview only available at Wineworks. So, Labotory planned to create a narrative to the existing Wineworks.
It is said that wine was the waterdrop of the gods and a god’s drink far before human history. Labotory took this and asked the question, if god of wine have existed, what would the space have been like? “Pantheon”, a temple dedicated to all gods, became the biggest concept for establishing the worldview of Wineworks. The studio wanted to express the extoic experience, to inform the history of mythology and to narrow the gap between the arts and the culture in space through this concept.
Through the analysis of the Pantheon, Labotory settled the plaza as a common space and the colonnade as the transition space. When entering inside through the entrance of the Pantheon, it was designed to feel a completely different sense of scale, sense of space and the main functions of the space.
Wineworks in Mokdong included a unique structural space with a separate hall to pair the space and the wines for its pairings with the food. The space as such used one long axis for an effective separation to induce a pathway of those going through. The dome shaped structure and the void of the ceiling found at the Pantheon are the two functions that labotory need to focus on in our space in terms of their different expression methods and are located at the most important place to show the grant of the concept.
Lastly, as for the color and the texture, labotory used a color that withholds the warmth of a sunray falling on the Pantheon from the warm sun and to carry the textures of the flow of time, marble, a nature’s material was processed to give change to the finishing material.
