The rolling hills above the main ridge of Australia's Mornington Peninsula, where avocado trees flourish and kangaroos thrive, are a natural gift. Mim Design's Seal Rock House stands here. The house is a newly built single-storey home designed by Mim Design to create a family home suitable for winter.
"From planning to concept, documentation and furniture procurement, our role was not only to maintain excellent collaboration with the builder and client, but ultimately to deliver a very detailed and unique Australian home." Mim Design says so.
Starting from the concept of a family home in winter, Mim Design strives to create a luxury home that releases warmth and quality in winter. From the rolling hills to the interior, high-grade grey dominates all views. From wood furniture to cloth sofas, everything is covered with grey filters, and the only visible decoration is the rolling hills of the Mornington Peninsula.
Floors throughout the house are raised, allowing it to store temperature during the cold winter months. The outline of the ground floor of the house is extended with grey planks to meet the lawn, creating a large ring corridor.
The kitchen is completely separated from the living room and is considered the soul of the house. As can be seen, the color of the kitchen is far different from the neutral color of the living room, with more oak as the dominant temperature and nature, which is also the intention of Mim Design to create a warm atmosphere in the interior through natural materials.
One of the advantages of the one-storey residence is that the living space, which represents life, can be connected to the earth and feel the charm of nature directly and authentically. The bedroom, a secluded and private domain, nevertheless shows tolerance and acceptance of the outside environment, with its bland colours preferring to absorb the dynamic colours and compositions of the outdoors and make them part of itself. This is what makes Mim Design so clever, not to speak straightforwardly of hauteur through elaborate and luxurious furniture and decoration, but instead to seek something more natural.
The grey of the bathroom comes from a combination of marble, terrazzo, and a black steel frame. These hard materials also give the bathroom a direct and rigid line and an additional calm charm. The designer has also designed a huge glass window at the bath, protected by black shutters for privacy, which are particularly flexible when the view of the outdoors is desired.
Mim Design carefully designed every space in Seal Rock House to connect beautifully with each other, and curated the combination of the interior and exterior with extraordinary views to accentuate the modern and superior feel of the House, completing the owner's vision for a winter family home.
