Cadogen Cafe

A spiral cafe with a rooftop garden in Chelsea, London, designed by British design studio NEX. The cafe is located in duke of york square, adjacent to the saatchi gallery on king's road, and is wrapped in 15cm thick concrete slabs.

The Cadogan Cafe has curved Windows that completely shrink in good weather. The Windows recede into the ground, allowing the dining area to extend into the surrounding plaza. The retractable curved glass element USES a chain system similar to the sash that lowers the window to the basement passage. These Windows are partially lowered to form a glass railing around the interior, or can be seated completely at ground level in the plaza.

The Cadogan Cafe's spiral structure USES a custom steel frame that echoes a section of the second-level enclosure of the original military building on the site. The pale walls curl up to form a concrete core that reflects the curved form of the exterior wall and houses an elevator. The ceiling of the Cadogan Cafe is lined with grey planks to emphasize its spiral form, while the curved seating stalls suggest the vaulted form of the structure.

At the very outside of the spiral building, the staircase leads to the roof garden above the dining room, which is open to the public independently of the space below. "The garden is a generous' gift 'for people to sit on the surrounding canopy or spend time rising from the din of busy squares and roads below," Studio NEX said.
