Tadao Ando

He Art Museum

I want to build an art museum that can integrate the rich and diverse cultures that have lasted for thousands of years in South China. I think the museum will become the most dynamic center of all the art, customs, climate, landscape and civilization in Lingnan. -- Tadao Ando

He Art Museum is a private art museum invested by his family and designed by Tadao Ando. It has a wide collection of paintings, calligraphy, photography and sculpture. The name "He" contains a variety of connotations, harmony, balance, wealth and union, which also convey the space and design characteristics of the new art museum. Before building the museum, Mr. Ando did extensive research on ancient Chinese history and Lingnan culture, incorporating its spirit and symbols into his architectural design.

Light, water, wind and other natural elements are integrated into the museum with Lingnan architectural cultural conception. In order to pursue the effect of urban art museum, the opposite images are combined with the architectural design of the museum, forming an architectural form composed of simple circles and squares. Ando said that He hoped that the museum could not only become the heart of Lingnan culture, but also expand the influence of the building to the whole Chinese society. He hoped that the artworks in the museum could make the whole building more vibrant and inspire inspiring thoughts with high quality space and art.

And the gallery's biggest feature is a pair of double spiral staircases, which lead up to the fourth floor and bathe in natural light from the patio above. Inspired by Lingnan's local architecture, the design draws on skylights, ancient Chinese cosmology and philosophy, as there is an ancient Chinese belief that the sky is round and even sacred. Light from the sky penetrates into the exhibition area through this skylight, creating a comfortable space that connects the inside and the outside.

With the exception of the square gallery on the lowest level, each floor and inside the gallery has a circular plan, while a pond surrounds the building on the outside, reflecting the Lingnan tradition of waterside pavilions and subtly conveying the area's location at the mouth of the Pearl River. When people walk onto the covered bridge, they will see the gallery across a large body of water, just like walking on a floating building.
