Tadao Ando did not simply invert the traditional ascension to the Holy Land; he adopted a series of different architectural Spaces conceived as a series of introductory theatres. Walking among the lotus flowers, you will feel that this is a place beyond the daily life, where the combination of architecture and nature, the calm echo of the water mirror, nature leads to meditation and asceticism.
After descending a narrow staircase on either side of the concrete walls typical of Ando's work, visitors finally arrive at the sacred space, where everything is wrapped in a warm vermillion -- an unusual use of color by the architect. Access to the temple is not straightforward: once again, the basic geometric elements force the visitor to follow a route that leads only gradually to the place of worship, continually offering surprises along the way.
