Kol Restaurant

The Kol Restaurant, A Mexican Restaurant in central London, United Kingdom, was designed by local interior design Studio A-Nrd Studio. The task was to bring an equally authentic Mexican feel to Kol's interior design. Studio founder Alessio Nardi embarked on an extensive field trip to better understand the country. "When you release your mind and become very sensitive to the small details you see in vernacular architecture, anonymous furniture, color and material combinations, ideas start to flow," he says.

The colourful architectural style of Mexican architect Luis Barragan has particularly influenced the appearance of the restaurant on the first floor of Kol, whose walls are painted in pink, cream yellow or pale orange plaster. In the middle of the room is an open kitchen. It is supported by three Oakwood islands with ovens, stoves and shelves for POTS and pans. The entire area is covered with black clay tiles to mimic Tesuntle, a volcanic rock native to Mexico.

The descent to the Chef’s table and Mezcaleria bar is characterised by a raw steel and oak spiral staircase, enveloped by a faceted glazed screen with hand-blown glass in clear and amber tones. Hanging clay lamps and planters by Mexican artisans accentuate the height adding tonal depth to the drum. The chef’s table dining room is inspired by modernist Mexican mansions with raw textural materials and a Wabi aesthetic. The floor to ceiling concrete finish is interrupted only by a reclaimed parquet floor runner and the oak glazed frames which look into the private kitchen and a patio with an installation of lush greenery.
