The painter and the sculptor are far apart. A third dimension that changes everything separates them. The sculptor's point of view will always be at 90º to the painter's point of view.

Eduardo Chillida, in full Eduardo Chillida Juantegui, born 10 January 1924 in San Sebastian, Spain, is a Spanish sculptor who gained international recognition for his work exhibited at the 1958 Venice Biennale. His sculptures are characterised by an artisan's respect for the material, both in small iron pieces and later in monumental works in granite.

After studying architecture at the University of Madrid from 1942 to 1947, Chillida turned to sculpting in clay and plaster. For ten years he worked mainly in iron, including four iron doors for the Aranzazu Cathedral in 1954, and in 1960 he began to create large sculptures in granite. Throughout his lifetime, he was recognized with a variety of awards, including the Venice Biennale International Prize, the Prix Kandinsky, Wilhem Lehmbruck Prize, Premio Principe de Asturias, the German Kaiserring, and the Japanese Praemium Imperiale.

Eduardo Chillida preferred to work with elemental forms, pared down to satisfy his essentially ascetic vision. His iron sculpture is marked by the contrast between the solidity of the iron and the openness of the design. His later granite works are also marked by their contrasting relationships, in particular the architectonic relationship of the large stone masses. Unlike most modern sculpture, his work is the product of direct contact with his materials, through forging metal or carving stone.
